D4.3: Framework for BIM, hardware and software data interoperability
Summary
This report describes the Framework for BIM, hardware and software data inter-operability. The Framework is the
architecture of relevant hardware, software and corresponding data formats and data flows within the INSITER project.
This resulting Framework or any part of it can be applied for companies using INSITER results. Next to the abstract
Framework a collection of tools and services is given as example materialization of the abstract Framework.
The framework as well as its materialization (specific applications filled in as examples or reference choices within the
abstract structure) will grow during the project as more applications, data stores, converters and services will arise. This
deliverable contains the basic abstract framework given by the requirements of the project INSITER and the status of the
work done till now. The framework is requested to be developed early in the INSITER project. This means the
requirements for the project are relatively ‘high-level’. Further on in the project the requirements are expected to evolve
into more detailed set of requirements. As Task 4.2 will be active for another 2 years the framework will be updated
when needed. More detailed requirements from use-cases, selected hardware, testing of different applications and
specifically the testing of BIM servers will improve and fine-tune both the abstract Framework as well as the
materialization of the Framework with applications, application types and more detailed information flows.
Deliverable D4.3 is of type ‘other’, it is not a document but a data schema (i.e. Framework). This document is however
created accompanying the Framework to explain the ideas behind and the road towards the framework (D4.3) we
created; this is the executive summary of the accompanying document of D4.3.
The Framework itself is described in chapter 6; it consists of the following items:
- The abstract structure of components and inter-connections.
- Applications, services and hardware used which are in one of the components.
- The data-formats and data-flows present.
This document starts, after a short introduction, with explaining BIM and open standards. The next chapter focuses on
the different sensor hardware INSITER is expected to support. The fourth chapter discusses the different software
components, here we especially focus on software supporting open BIM standards, i.e. freely available IFC Viewers and
available BIM / IFC server solutions. The fore-last chapter describes the actual Framework, i.e. the actual D4.3 result.
This chapter will discuss the abstract Framework, where what software components can be embedded and the different
data-formats and data-flows within the Framework. The document ends with the conclusions.
Deliverable D4.3 is expected to be directly the end-result of the Framework. However, we found the framework is
depending on several decisions in the project that still need to be taken, like conclusion on use-cases and used
hardware. If further developments within INSITER will change requirements we need to improve the Framework or
update distribution of software types, data-formats and/or data-flows. The updated version of the Framework will be
distributed within INSITER. The Framework is a public deliverable.
